Jesus Heals the Ten Lepers

Luke 17:11-19

This story is told using an overhead projector.  

1. Print the pattern pieces.
2. Cut out the people.  Print six of the people standing in a group with their arms down.
3. Using a hole punch, punch leprosy dots out of four of those pictures of people standing in a group with their arms down.
4. Turn the overhead projector on and show only the pieces listed above when telling the story.
5. Pulling the overhead projector backwards makes the people look more life- size if you want.

What is a Miracle?

My friend, June Hill, was attempting to explain to her students what a miracle is.  In an effort to demonstrate a miracle, she performed this magic trick.  At the end, she explained that what she had done was a simple magic trick. She showed them how she had done it.

She told them that miracles may look like magic tricks because they are surprising, but they are not magic tricks.  Instead, miracles are surprising events that take place due to supernatural powers from God.  She went on to teach a series of lessons on the miracles of Jesus.

The first thing she did was put a penny in the middle of a blank sheet of white paper.

Then she got a clear drinking glass and a rolled up a black piece of construction paper (that had been taped to stay rolled up).

She put the rolled up construction paper over the drinking glass.

Then she picked up the glass (with the paper still on it) and placed it on top of the penny.

When she took the piece of black paper off the drinking glass, the penny had disappeared!

The trick to this illusion is that she had attached a piece of white paper to the bottom of the drinking glass before she set the drinking glass on the larger rectangle piece of paper.  When the glass was set on the larger white paper, no one could see the white paper attached to the drinking glass.  Placing the black paper over the glass helped keep the children from seeing the white paper on the bottom of the glass when she moved it and placed it on top of the penny.

Jesus Heals the Ten Lepers

Luke 17:11-19

The concept behind this project is the same concept seen in the story of the Rich Young Ruler.  Click on that link to see a short video showing exactly how these Frixion Pens work.  In short, heat makes the red ink disappear so the leper will "magically" be healed!

Materials:

• Very simple coloring page of man
• Colored pencils or markers
• Red Frixion Pen - Pilot brand (Found at Walgreen's and Staples)
• Heat embossing tool (I found mine at a garage sale) or blow dryer 

Instructions:

• Color the coloring page with colored pencils or markers.  (Do not use crayon as the wax will melt and make a mess!  Then your page will not be reusable.) Do not laminate.
• Color red leprosy dots on the skin with a red Frixion pen.
• When telling the story, use a heat embossing tool (for scrapbooking) or a blow dryer.  The heat from these tools will make the red ink disappear and he will be healed!

Basket from Paper Sack

 Jesus Feeds the 5,000 (John 6:1-24)

or

Ruth 

Materials:

Paper Sack (size depends on how big you want the basket to be)

Pen or pencil

Scissors 

Instructions:

1. Fold a paper sack in half lenghthwise.

 2.  Draw a curved line at the top corner that is NOT on the fold (the word written   in the corner says "cut".)
3.  Draw a line on the fold where you will cut the handles out as shown in the picture.

 4.  Cut on the lines you drew and open it to look like this.

 5.  Stand it up and you have a basket. The children put shredded tan colored paper for wheat or Shredded Wheat cereal in the basket for the story of Ruth.  They put loaves and fish for the story of Jesus Feeding the 5,000. Under the tab marked Jesus' Miracles, there is a craft for Jesus Feeding the 5,000 that this would work very well for.

If you want shorter handles, cut the top of the paper bag down to a smaller size before drawing and cutting the handles.

John 6:1-15

 When telling this Bible story, I show the children my small basket, 2 fish cut outs and 5 pieces of bread cut out. 

As I am telling the story, I place the 5 loaves and 2 fish inside the basket. After telling about how Jesus gave thanks, I pull on a string that is hidden on the back of the basket. See picture below:

 When I pull slowly on the string, the loaves and fish keep coming and coming and coming and coming!  There are many, many more than are pictured below:

The children are always asking, "How did you do that?"  Then I let them make one so they can retell the story for their parents, grandparents, and friends.

Materials:
Small basket (paper or plastic - I have another post under Jesus' Miracles which shows how to make a basket from a plain paper sack)
Lots of paper fish and loaves cut out
String
Tape

Instructions:

• Set aside 5 loaves and 2 fish cutouts.
• Lay out a long piece of string on the table.  Tape many small fish and loaves cut outs to the string.  (Make sure it is not super super long or it will get tangled). Leave some space at one end of the string so it can hang over the back of the basket without being seen.
•  Very carefully put one end of the string into the basket and slowly let the fish and loaves (that are taped onto it) ease into the basket.
• Hang the other end over the edge of the basket as seen in the picture.
• Take your basket and your fish and loaves and tell the story! Make sure the kids cannot see the string.  (You can put your thumb over it).

Clothesline Storytelling

The Miraculous Catch of Fish and Breakfast on the Beach

John 21:1-14

The children act out the story by standing behind the clothes that belong to their character in the story.  As I tell the story, they say their lines (prompted by me) and act by moving their hands or picking up props.  The children thoroughly enjoy this type of storytelling activity because they don't actually have to put the clothes on.  They just stand behind them.  I started with these simple "clothes" made simply by draping fabric over the clothesline - no sewing at all.  I started out with just a few props such as the net and some homemade fish. 

I created clothesline poles to hold my clothesline rope.  (Make sure these poles can hold a little weight without tipping over.)  Then I hung a rope between the two poles low enough for the children to see over.  For these "clothes", I just draped striped and solid fabric over the rope and made a small belt from the same fabric. (Just a strip of fabric - no sewing.)

For Jesus, since he was standing alone, I just draped the fabric over a chair and draped a small piece of blue fabric on top.

After doing this story, I went to garage sales and picked up some cute dress-up clothes such as a Belle costume (from Beauty and the Beast) that I use clothespins and pin on the line for Esther, some king costumes as well as many others that work for other Bible stories. The ideas are endless! I found some crowns they can wear as well as some cute beards (on sale right after Halloween) that I glued onto card stock and put a tongue depressor on the bottom as a handle.  The children can hold this in front of their face like a handheld mask.

I found the leper pattern on a website that no longer exists.  I chose to copy it onto cardstock so it would hold up better. The children will often want to color this guy.

Then I cut a piece of transparency (sometimes leftover lamination works too) the same size as my page.  I taped the transparency to the top of the page.  Then fold the tape so that the transparency lay on top of the leper.  With a permanent marker, I let the kids put red dots for leprosy on this arms, legs, and face.  

When it comes time for the leper to be healed, just lift up the transparency and he is healed.  

Another alternative is to us a dry erase marker on the transparency and let the children just wipe off the leprosy.

I have used this leper with the story of Naaman being Healed (II Kings 5: 1-19) as well as with the story of the Healing of the Ten Lepers (Luke 17:11-19).

Beanbag Fish

Miraculous Catch of Fish

Luke 5

I made a bunch of these beanbag fish to use with many fish stories.  I like to use these the most with the story of Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish.  I like to use a real net and have the children fish on one side of a pretend boat.   After quite a while of not catching anything, I have a child pretending to be Jesus tell them to cast the net on the other side. When they cast their net on the other side, we fill the net with these fabric fish.  They are HEAVY!  It gives them the feeling that the nets are about to break like it says in the Bible story.  When these fish are filled with rice, they feel floppy and feel more like real fish.

I have told this story to small groups using this smaller package but I have also told this story to large groups using a poster sized package.  They both work great.  Every time I tell it, the kids are amazed and ask "How did you do that?"  

I have made another story using this concept called "Naaman" which has already been posted.  The next story using this concept is about the Boy Who Shared His Loaves and Fish and will be posted at a later date.

I found this really beautifully done PowerPoint on www.sermons4kids.com. Click on Art by Henry Martin and scroll down to the bottom of the page for several really good PowerPoints. When you click on the "Jesus Walks on Water" PowerPoint link, you will first see the pictures only.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you can download the entire PowerPoint.  Henry Martin does really gorgeous work on this PowerPoint.  

I like to make things from the PowerPoints such as this small book.  I print out each picture to make a small book like this for each child so he/she can have their own book to look at while I am telling the story.  I just glued the pictures to dark blue construction paper, laminated it,  and bound it with a binding machine.  You can use packing tape or staples to bind it instead.  Then I send the book home with the child to read with their family.

This same thing can be done with any PowerPoint including the ones from this blog and others.

For older children, I make the book without laminating it.  I have these children read the Bible story and then write their own words to put in the book.

Matthew 14:22-36

Pop-up pages can be an exciting way to retell the Bible story.  This one shows Peter sinking as he is attempting to join Jesus who is walking on the water.  You can use this same concept of making a pop-up page for many different stories!  I will include more pictures at a later time.

I cut out the boat and people with a die cut and construction paper.  The water (waves) is bulletin board border.

I found this magnetic fishing game at a store where everything is a dollar.  I glued a penny to the bottom of one of the fish.  The kids take turns fishing until they find the tax money.  Then we throw all the fish back in and let another child have a turn.

Jesus Walks on the Water Blacklight

I got a $5 sheet and cut it in fourths. (This works best with an off-white sheet.)  I used a coloring book page for the ship and Jesus. I printed the coloring book page on a transparency and used an overhead projector to enlarge it on my sheet. (It could be done with a computer and projector as well.)  I drew the picture on the sheet with fabric markers leaving a space for Jesus.  I drew the picture of Jesus by painting it with glow in the dark paint.  When the lights are on, Jesus does not appear.  But turn off the lights or use a blacklight, and Jesus magically appears!

These are two different game boards for the Lost Sheep Scratch Off Game.  I have made 6 different game boards.  There are 2 game boards on each of the pages linked below.  They are free downloads to use and share.

To play this game, print off the game boards, paint a large circle of green paint (with dish soap added) over the sheep and the other bushes, let dry, and let the kids use a penny or Popsicle stick to scratch off the paint from each bush in search of a lost sheep.  For full instructions, click here.

Jesus Changes Water to Wine

Jesus Changes Water to Wine

John 2:1-11

I found these neat color changing cups.  They come in white, blue, and orange at the place I saw them.  The neat thing about these cups is that they change colors with a change in temperature.  For example, the cup is white but when you add ice cold water, the cup changes to red. (Blue changes to purple and orange changes to red.)  If you pour the water out, the cup returns to room temperature and turns white again.  You can use this cup over and over!

When telling this Bible story, I show them that I have a container of plain water (must be very cold - you could have ice in it to keept it cold) and that there is nothing in the cup.  In the part of the story where Jesus turns the water to wine, I pour the ice cold water into the cup and the cup immediately begins to turn red.  The kids are amazed!  They always ask, "How did you do that?"  I never tell them the secret because they may have siblings who come to my class the next year.  I want to keep it a surprise for them as well.

Jesus Calms the Storm Bathtub Toy

Jesus Calms the Storm

Mark 4:35 - 41

We made this craft for Bible class many months ago and the children are still playing with it and retelling this story at home.  It was a huge hit! 
The boats were made from Pringles Singles containers. The people and waves were made from fun foam.  I die cut the people using a Sizzix die but this could be done on a Cricut machine. I hot glued the waves on the boat ahead of time so it would be dry and they could put it in the water during class.  I let the children draw the faces. Then each child was able to use their set to help tell the story in a large tub of water.

On one side, the fun foam water is stormy and Peter is panicking.  His face is full of fear with his mouth open wide.  When you show this side of the "boat", Jesus is sleeping calmly. We blew on the water some and splashed a little water.  See picture above. 
When telling the part of the story where Jesus calmed the storm, turn the boat to the other side where the fun foam water is calm.  Turn Jesus over. He is awake and calming the storm. Turn Peter over and show his happy, smiling face. There is no more blowing on the water and no more splashing.  See picture below:

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

Here's a cute necklace I made for the story of Jesus Feeding the Five Thousand.

Materials:



White lanyard (string)
7 blue pony beads
5 brown oblong beads
2 fun foam fish

The kids had a great time making these!  When they were finished, they wore them and were excited to tell the story to anyone who would look at their necklace and listen. Pin It
